The Nepali team had also won two previous matches. Put into bat first, the hosts were dismissed for 149 runs in 49 overs. Nepal scored 153-6 in the 38th over in reply. Nepali skipper Binod Das and Raj Kumar Pradhan claimed three wickets each. Amrit Bhattarai also took two while Sanjam Regmi and Basant Regmi pocketed one wicket each. In reply, opener Paresh Lohani top-scored with 34 runs for the touring team. Electing to bat first, the host team scored 173 in 49.2 overs - the target Nepal achieved in the 40th over losing six wickets. On Thursday, Nepal defeated Sri Lanka Cricket Colts XI by two runs in a 45-over match. For Friday’s victory, Kanishka Chaugai, who had led Nepal U-19 team to plate championship victory in the island country two years ago, scored 62 runs while Shakti Gauchan got 47 runs. Vice-captain Paras Khadka played a handy knock of 26 runs. KATHMANDU, July 17 - Sharad Vesawkar put up an all-round show as Nepal edged Sri Lanka Cricket Board Colts XI by two runs in a practice match played at the St Sebastian College Ground on Thursday. Vesawkar made a classy fifty as Nepal made 248/7 in 45 overs after being put in to bat and then returned with the cherry to scalp four wickets to restrict the Lankans to 246/8 in 45 overs. Nepal owed the big score to a solid 78-run opening start provided by Mahesh Chhetri and Kaniska Chaugain. Chhetri made 52 off 66 balls while Chaugain, making a come back after returning from the United States on a holiday, hit 43 off 55 with five fours and a six. After the fall of openers and Dipendra Chaudhary (0), Vesawkar forged up a crucial partnership with Gyanendra Malla, who made 29 off 24 with a boundary and two sixes, to maintain the momentum. Vesawkar hit three fours and one six in his unbeaten 61-ball innings of 54. Allrounder Paras Khadka (26 off 30) and Shakti Gauchan (28* off 27) then gave Vesawkar company to build up a formidable total. Nepal grabbed two awards at the inaugural Asian Cricket Council awards in a glittering function in Karachni, Pakistan on Saturday evening. Paras Khadka, who captained U-19 team in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup and Youth World Cup, and Nary Thapa, woman team’s captain, received awards as emerging Asian players. Paras won the Best Emerging Asian Cricketer of the Year while Nary received the Best Emerging Asian Woman Cricketer of the Year. The two awards were only awards for the associate nations.

KATHMANDU, May 30 - Nepal put up a dismal batting performance to bow out of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 tournament with a 37-run semifinal loss at the hands of Afghanistan at the Grainville ground in Jersey on Friday. After the bowlers bowled brilliantly to restrict Afghanistan to 142 in 49.3 overs, Nepali batsmen batted miserably to end Nepal’s remote chances of qualifying for the 2011 World Cup. Afghanistan, which had also dumped Nepal out of the inaugural T20 Asia Cup held in Kuwait in October last year, and the other finalist Jersey will now join Hong Kong, Fiji, Tanzania and Italy in the six-nation ICC WCL Division 4 to be held at the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam from 4 to 11 October to pursue their World Cup dreams. Allrounder Mehboob Alam topscored with 17 off 37 coming in at No 7 but the damage was already done at the top with opening bowler Dawlat Ahmadzai taking three wickets to reduce Nepal to 55/6. It all started with the second ball dismissal of opener Paresh Lohani (0 off 2) followed by the wicket of No 3 Sharad Vesawkar (3 off as Nepal wobbled to 12/2 in 3.5 overs. Opener Mahesh Chhetri (9 off 66) and Shakti Gauchan (9 off 57) then batted painstakingly slow adding just 25 runs in 91 balls to allow the Afghan bowlers to take control of the match. Gyanendra Malla (11 off 34), skipper Binod Das (12 off 32) and Basanta Regmi (10 off 16) were the only other batsmen apart from Alam to reach double figures as Paras Khadka (1 off 9), Sanjam Regmi (5* off 13) and Raj Kumar Pradhan failed to provide the impetus. Gul Abed, Hamid Hassan and Nabi Eisakhil took two wickets each for the winning side. Earlier, M Nabi Eisakhil scored 48 runs off 64 balls to guide Afghanistan to the total after Nepali bowlers took stranglehold of the Afghan innings. Left arm spinners Shakti Gauchan and Basanta snared three wickets but the brakes were put on by the new ball pair of skipper Binod Das and Mehbob Alam. Das took 2/22 in eight overs while Alam got 1/13 in eight to reduce Afghanistan to 29/3 after it was 26 for no loss after electing to bat. Shakti then continued to suffocate the Afghans giving away just 12 in eight overs while Basanta helped himself with late wickets to return figures of 3/30 in 8.3 overs as Afghanistan was bowled out in 49.3 overs. Leg spinner Raj Kumar Pradhan took 1/30 in eight overs. 29 May 2008 Four teams reached the semi-finals of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 (WCL Div. 5) in Jersey on Thursday but the quartet all know one thing: only two of them can go forward to Division 4 and the next stage of qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. The final four from the 12 teams that started the event are hosts Jersey, the USA, Nepal and Afghanistan with the semi-finals pairings matching up Jersey and the USA with Nepal facing off against Afghanistan. The winners of Friday’s matches will not only progress through to Saturday’s final but will also join Hong Kong, Fiji, Tanzania and Italy in the six-team ICC WCL Div. 4 set for the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam from 4 to 11 October. Out of the four matches rescheduled for Thursday, the games between Nepal and the USA and Mozambique and Vanuatu were abandoned due to persistent rain while in the other two matches, Singapore beat Japan by 52 runs while using the Duckworth-Lewis scoring method and Germany defeated Norway by six wickets. Singapore, needing to beat Japan by a huge margin to leapfrog Afghanistan on net run-rate, was out of contention for a place in the semi-final after it was restricted to 201 all out in 35.4 overs after being put into bat. A 52-run victory only earned it third place in Group B behind Jersey and Afghanistan. Nepal topped Group A after its match against the USA was abandoned due to rain at the Farmers CC. Nepal, batting first, was restricted to 182 all out in 50 overs and before the USA could start its target chase, rain came down to force a no-result. Nepal captain Binod Kumar Das said his team was confident ahead of its semi-final against Afghanistan. “We are upbeat as we have been playing good cricket. As a team we are very confident of doing well in the semi-final. “One thing we know about Afghanistan is it is inconsistent. It can be world beaters one day and inconsistent other days, so we hope we can have a good day against it.” Das added: “We are not very aware of these things right now as our focus is on the cricket but we heard yesterday that the country was declared a republic so we are proud of that. The people of Nepal wanted that to happen and if we win this tournament and come back home with the trophy we are going to dedicate the win to the people.” Afghanistan captain Norooz Khan Mangal hoped his team would learn from its mistakes and put up an improved performance on Friday. “We are not short of any confidence. The biggest motivation for us ahead of tomorrow’s match is if we win it, we will take a big step forward in our quest to play in the World Cup. “Every team needs time to adjust to new conditions and after playing four matches here, we know what we need to do tomorrow to swing the match in our favour. If experience is on Nepal’s side, then talent and potential is on our side and tomorrow we just need to pull together a good team effort.” The USA captain Steve Massiah said his team was looking ahead at Friday’s semi-final against Jersey with great anticipation. “It is something to look forward to as if we want to move forward from this tournament into the other league and get to the World Cup then we have look to tomorrow’s game with great anticipation. “It will be a tough test as Jersey was unbeaten in the preliminary rounds. As both the teams are in good form, I am sure we will have a good game of cricket.” Massiah said he was pleased with the performance of his team so far but warned his side of complacency. “It would be unfair to the guys not to be pleased after getting a perfect four from four. “We do not fear any opposition and we just try to concentrate on our strengths and realise if we play to our full potential then we will be a hard team to beat. But we have to guard against complacency.” Jersey captain Mathew Hague said: “It should be a really good game as the USA has been in good form and so have we. There is a lot to play for and to get into the final and go to Tanzania would be something really special so we’ll all look forward to it and it should be great.” Hague acknowledged home advantage would be useful, but played down the fact that it would be a big advantage. “I suppose it helps a little bit but all the teams have played over here for a few games now so they should know the conditions.

Nepal entered the semifinals of the World Cricket League Division 5 tournament beating Vanuatu by 137 runs at the Victoria College Ground on Tuesday to record its fourth straight victory. Opener Mahesh Chhetri made 65 as Nepal made 220/9 in 46 overs in the rain-curtailed match and Nepal then bowled out Vanuatu for 83 runs. Nepal plays USA at Les Quennevais 1 ground Wednesday to decide the group winner. Chhetri played a patient innings of 65 from 112 balls while Mehboob Alam made attacking 34 off 19 coming in at No 5 to lay the foundation for a commanding total after Nepal was sent in to bat first. Opener Paresh Lohani made 28 off 34 while No 3 Sharad Vesawkar made 20 off 46. Basanta Regmi made unbeaten 19 off 22 while Gyanendra Malla (12 off 17) and Paras Khadka (11 0ff 6) also made useful contributions. M Nimoho took 3/53 for Vanuatu. Chasing a formidable target for victory, Vanuatu never looked to be going for victory and was behind the required rate right from the beginning. NEPAL PROVED TO BE TOO STRONG FOR NORWAY

26 May 2008 Nepal proved much too strong for Norway at Farmers Field on Monday, and their 108-run victory virtually guaranteed them a place in Friday’s semi-finals. But at one stage, with the Nepalese on 73 for five, it seemed as if Norway might bowl themselves into a winning position against one of the fancied sides in the tournament. The start was delayed for three-quarters of an hour after more heavy overnight rain had soaked the outfield and seepage had created a wet spot at one end of the pitch, and Norwegian skipper Shahid Ahmed gave his side an early advantage by winning the toss and inviting Nepal to bat. It was a good toss to win, and Ahmed Bhatti soon showed that he had learned something from Sunday’s experience against the USA by testing the Nepalese openers with some aggressive seam bowling. It was his partner Aamir Waheed who achieved the initial breakthrough, however, when Paresh Lohani edged to Syed Munawar Ahmed, the first of five catches for the Norwegian keeper, when the total was 9. Bhatti then removed Vesawkar, and Nepal were 18 for two. Mahesh Chhetri and Shakti Gauchan restored their side’s fortunes somewhat with a stand of 31, but with Zeeshan Ali getting rid of Gauchan, Waheed dismissing Chhetri, and then Bhatti returning to account for Gyanendra Malla, Nepal were in some trouble. Paras Khadka was now joined by Mahaboob Alam, however, and the man who had made history on Sunday by taking all ten wickets against Mozambique set about proving his batting’s value to his side. He and Khadka added 40 for the sixth wicket, and after Khadka gave a simple return catch to Majid Zia Butt, having made 23 from 32 balls, and Basant Regmi soon followed, Alam and skipper Binod Das put on a further 40 for the eighth. Alam steadily made his way to his half-century, making it off 71 balls with five boundaries, but two balls later he became Butt’s third victim, lofting a drive to Abdul Hadi trying to increase the tempo. Das stayed to the end, making 32 off 53 balls, and Nepal were all out for 204 two balls before the scheduled close. Butt finished with three for 23, and Zeeshan Ali with three for 45. Alam and Das began with miserly spells against the Norwegian openers, only seven runs coming off the bat in the first ten overs, and both Zaheer Ashiq and Sameer Sachdev being trapped leg-before by Alam in the process. The scoring rate did not pick up significantly when Dhirendra Bahadur and Khadka entered the attack, and with each bowler claiming two wickets Norway were reduced to 46 for six by the end of the 26th over. Abdul Hadi and Adeel Ibrar survived for ten overs, adding 22 for the seventh wicket, but by this time the match was effectively over. Spinners Sanjam and Basant Regmi were equally economical, and the fact that Norway eventually reached 96 before they were dismissed in the 47th over was in large measure due to some effective hitting from Ahmed Bhatti, who belted two sixes in making an 18-ball, not-out 15. Alam won the Man of the Match award for the second day running, his half-century having been the decisive feature of the game. 25 May 2008 Nepal’s left-arm seamer Mahaboob Alam produced an extraordinary performance at Grainville on Sunday, taking all ten wickets at a cost of 12 runs as Mozambique were bowled out for 19 in 14.5 overs. Alam was on a hat-trick three times in the course of his 7.5 overs, and finished off the innings with four wickets – three of them bowled – in six balls. He bowled straight and full throughout his spell, and four of his victims were out leg-before. Remarkably, in the first attempt to play the match on Saturday, in which Mozambique had been bowled out for 70 before the rain descended, Alam had contributed a wicketless five-over spell as Binod Das and Basant Regmi each collected five-wicket hauls. But on Sunday he was not to be denied, and the Mozambicans had no answer to his mastery of line and length. Mozambique were chasing a Nepalese total of 238 for seven, which represented a good recovery after they had been 30 for three at one stage. Imtiyaz Lili picked up two wickets and Aasif Koliya one, but then Shakti Gauchan and Gyanendra Malla restored the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 73. Gauchan went for 34, but Malla continued in partnership with Paras Khadka, adding 80 for the fifth wicket. Khadka was the next to go, after making 44 off 50 balls with two fours and a six, and Malla was finally out for 71, made from 101 balls with four boundaries. Alam and Basant Regmi pushed the total up to 234, and it had reached 238 by the close. Koliya was the most successful of the Nepalese bowlers with three for 49. The Nepalese total always seemed likely to be too much for Mozambique, but nobody could have reckoned with Alam’s unbelievable achievement. There wasn’t too much doubt about who would win the Man of the Match award. Nepal got a comprehensieve victory

KATHMANDU, May 23 - Basanta Regmi and Mehboob Alam each grabbed three wickets as Nepal began the World Cricket League Division 5 campaign strongly defeating Germany by seven wickets at the Les Quennevais Ground, Jersey on Friday. They wrecked the German innings bowled it out for 69 in 39.4 overs. Nepal achieved the target in 20.2 overs with Mahesh Chhetri remaining unbeaten on 23. Man-of-the-match Basanta finished with an impressive figure of 5.5-4-4-3 while new-ball bowler Mehboob, who bowled through his 10-over spell, got three wickets for 24 runs. It was first time after 2001 ICC Trophy that the two country faced each other. Nepal had defeated Germany by two runs in the earlier meeting, but this time it proved strong enough to bowl the European side out for the lowest total of the opening day. Germany won the toss and elected to bat first. With Mehboob firing and captain Binod Das bowling tight line, the Germans were under pressure immediately. Binod got a wicket in the first over and it looked like a lop-sided match within 10 overs. "We probably lost the match in the first 10 overs. They bowled very well," German captain Grammar Sommer said. Asif Khan topscored for Germany with 22 runs. Once spinners came into action, it was more difficult for the Europeans to get runs. Shakti Gauchan bowled seven overs giving away just six runs for a wicket while Raj Kumar Pradhan gave 11 runs for a wicket in three overs. Nepal's batting was not on par with its bowling as Paresh Lohani failed to open account. Sharad Vesawkar (12) and Shakti Gauchan (11) got starts but failed to stay long. But opener Mahesh Chhetri scored 23 off 54 balls to guide Nepal to victory. Gyanendra Malla remained unbeaten on three runs. "I am happy for my team. It's important for us to get good start and we got it," Binod said. "We did well with the bowling but we could have batted better. Anyway, a win is a win and it came so comfortably for us." "We are obviously disappointed but we are happy that we picked up three wickets," Sommer said. In other matches, USA beat Mozambique by nine wickets after restricting it to 148/7 in 50 overs; Norway beat Vanuatu by 177 runs; Botswana defeated Bahamas by 70 runs and Afghanistan edged Japan by 70 runs. NEPAL WITH A GREAT START

On their way to Jersey for the World Cricket League Division 5, Nepal stopped at Guernsey for two-friendly matches both of which they won comfortably. Nepal beat Bahamas by 201 runs before beating hosts Guernsey by 70 runs. Nepal scored 209/7 in 50 overs and bowled out Guernsey for 139. Against Guernsey, Nepal were at one stage in the mire at 65 for 5 against some excellent Guernsey bowling. They were rescued by a partnership of 103 between Sarad Veswakar and Mehboob Alam, the latter providing the impetus with 45 off 59 balls with Veswakar making 72 from 139 balls. Basant Regmi remained unbeaten on 20 while Binod Das got 15 not out. Guernsey were well aware of the potency of Nepal’s seam attack and Alam struck immediately with the wicket of Mark Jefferies with one of his big inswingers. The wickets of Smit, Oliver and Ravenscroft followed quickly and Guernsey were soon four down with only 40 on the board. Skipper Stuart Le Prevost with a hard fought 41 and Jeremy Frith with 24 steadied the ship and were rebuilding nicely before the injured Frith, batting with a runner, was run out. Le Prevost kept going and appeared unlucky to be given leg before. With his dismissal the home side’s chances were fading and Rajkumar Pradhan’s legbreaks wrapped things up with 4 for 36. Mehboob and Paras Khadka each took two wickets. The match was a very useful exercise for both teams. Guernsey competed very well and the real difference between the two sides was the sheer quality of Nepal’s seam attack which could be too much for most of their opponents in Jersey. Nepal knew that they had been tested by a decent Guernsey side seeking to demonstrate that it would not be out of its depth at WCL Division 5 level. The massive gulf between these two teams and the Bahamas suggests that the Bahamas will struggle in Jersey and that Nepal will be strongly fancied to reach the final. Bahamas lost to Guernsey too. Earlier, Nepal crushed the Bahamas by 201 runs at the Port Soif ground. Nepal batted first and made 272 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs. Paras Khadka top scored with an unbeaten 63 while Shakti Gauchan with 50 and Gyanandra Malla with 48 were the other main contributors. G Armstrong (2 for 19) and N Ekanyake (2 for 42) returned the best figures for the Bahamas. The Bahamas got off to an awful start and were 6 for 3 after 4 overs. Then 60 for 6 before being dismissed for 71 in 31 overs. C Atkinson (19) and M Ford (18) were their top scorers as Mehaboob Alab (2 for 16 in 6 overs), Binod Das (2 for 20 in 6 overs) and Rajkumar Pradam (3 for 19 in 9.4 overs) ran through them.

Spinners helped Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) XI registered an upset victory over visiting Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Academy in the final of three one-day matches at the TU Cricket Ground on Sunday. Brought in after the visitors hit 47 runs of first two overs while chasing lowly 136 for victory, the spinners did the trick for Nepal and the stand-in captain Paras Khadka walked away with praise for his experimental decisions that proved successful. PBC Academy were bowled out for 121 in 28.3 overs with off-spinner Sanjam Regmi emerging the hero with a more than impressive figure of 8.3-4-6-5. Basant Regmi took three for 28 in 8 overs while Shakti Gauchan and Sarad Vesawkar each grabbed a wicket. Ahmed Shahzad hit pacer Amrit Bhattarai for five fours in the first over while his partner Raheel Majeed hit four boundaries and a six off Dhirendra Chand in the second over that also included a bye four. With 47/0 after 12 balls, PCB looked like cruising to a quick victory before lunch but Paras brought in Shakti and Basant. Shakti got Majeed (27 off 14 with five fours and a six) in the last over before lunch and Shahzad (32 off 25 with seven fours) holed out one off Basant to Sarad in the first over after lunch to make it 65/2. Six balls later, Basant claimed Khurram Manzoor (1) to make it 76/3 and it was splendid bowling of Sanjam then after. Pakistanis continued trying to be aggressive while Sanjam’s turn along with innovative field placing by Paras checked runs. In the first of the three-match series, hailed as a test for the national team before World Cricket League Division 5, Nepal first failed to utilize the batting foundation and then witnessed strong batting from a ‘tough competitor.’ CAN XI, practically the national team, scored 152 in 46 overs after Binod Das elected to bat first. The visitor’s run-chase was halted by rainfall and their innings reduced to 29 overs. The target was revised to 112 which they scored in 23.2 overs losing three wickets. Pakistani openers went untroubled to 39 before Manzoor, who had scored a half-century in his only ODI against Zimbabwe, was caught behind off Binod. He scored 18 off 20 balls with a four and two sixes. But his partner Raheel Majeed was in different mood and carried his team up to 23rd over. Nepal's preparation for Worldcup qualifying

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced a busy preparation schedule for the World Cricket League Division 5 Tournament that begins on May 23 in Jersey. Announcing the final team for the event, Nepal’s only chance to qualify for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, CAN announced seven practice matches before meeting Germany in the opening match of the 12-nation event. Nepal plays Bangladesh’s Dhaka Club Limited on May 2 before playing three one-day matches against visiting Pakistan Cricket Board Academy team. The matches against PCB Academy are scheduled on May 8, 9 and 11 in Kathmandu. On the way to Jersey, Nepal will play English county side Sussex’s Academy Team at Gatwick, London and will stop in Guernsey for two friendly matches — one each against Bahamas and Guernsey. According to CAN, the five-day Guernsey tour is managed by International Cricket Council (ICC). “More practice matches have been scheduled to hone the ability of the players since WCL Div 5 is an important event for Nepal,” a CAN release signed by spokesperson Tarak Mani Dixit said. Nepal is in Group A alongside USA, Germany, Mozambique, Norway and Vanuatu for WCL Div 5. Group B consists of Afghanistan, Japan, Jersey, Singapore, Bahamas and Botswana. Nepal plays Germany on May 23, Mozambique on May 24, Norway on May 26, Vanuatu on May 27 and USA on May 28. All semifinals, including the playoff semifinals, will be played on May 30 while the final and matches to decide rankings will be played on May 31. Region No 3 Kathmandu lifted the Springwood National League Cricket Tournament title after emerging the winner of an epic battle with defending champions Region No 4 Bhairahawa at the TU Cricket Ground on Sunday. The final was decided on the last ball with Bhairahawa felling by just a run. Requiring 169 in 36 overs for victory on a revised target, Bhairahawa ended at 167/9. Kathmandu had earlier scored 199 in 49.3 overs. It was some terrific batting from the tail-enders that put Bhairahawa back on the track after the match looked dead for them at 136/9 with five overs to go. But No 10 Mohan Thapa attacked the bowling and netted 29 runs off 27 balls with a four and a six, but his efforts went in vain after he could not get four in last two balls. Having gone into the last over with eight required, Mohan and last man Faizal Khan ran a run each on first four balls bowled by Paras Khadka. The fifth ball was a straight fuller that Mohan could only defend back to Paras. On the last ball, the team needed four to win but he could only get a two as Kathmandu players roared around the ground in celebration after winning the title for the first time in fourth final. Before Mohan’s heroics, it was Rahul Biswokarma who scored 36 in 37 balls with two fours and a six to take his team near the required total. After the top order failed to get good runs. Among seven top order batsmen, only Shakti Gauchan (24), Antim Thapa (21) and Bijaya Thapa (19) got to double figure while four other totaled 16 runs. It was Pramod Basnet who pegged Bhairahawa early by getting two openers in between of which Bijaya slipped while running to get run-out. Left-arm spinner Raju Basnet too got two in the middle while Sarad took two vital wickets – of Shakti and Rahul to simmer Bhairahawa hopes of becoming only second team after Biratnagar to defend the title. “Rain played the spoilsport,” Bhairahawa captain Shakti said. The match was played on overcast condition and was stopped after three overs of Bhairahawa for rainfall and the target revised. Earlier, Kathmandu’s decision to bat first proved a good one as their top order batted well. Captain Paresh Lohani and Dipendra Chaudhary added 43 as openers with Dipendra scoring 35 off 48 balls. Sarad got 44 off 81 balls and Gyanendra Malla topscored with 60 off 92 balls. Together, Sarad and Gyanendra added 91 runs for third wicket and took Kathmandu to a competitive total. Paras’s late assault of 18 off 17 with two sixes and Pramod’s 10 took them to 199 in 49.3 overs. All Kathmandu wickets went to spinners with Basant Regmi taking three, Shakti and Rahul claiming two each. Kathmandu received Rs 75,000 as the winners while Bhairahawa took home Rs 40,000. Bhairahawa won the toss and invited Kathmandu to bat first. Paresh Lohani followed his two half-centuries with 11 and Sharad Veswakar got 5 before Dipendra Chaudhary complained about the lack of the sight screen and Kathmandu decided to stop the match. Dipendra complained that as the ball got older it looked like the wall on the background. “When we last played here, we told Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), we can not play without the screen,” captain Paresh Lohani said. The match originally scheduled for Lab Ground was shifted in the last minute. The match was resumed after 102 minutes when the technical committee and two teams talked the matters and reduced the match to 45-overs affair. Kathmandu lost Dipendra immediately and Gyanendra Malla played an aggressive knock of 31 hitting two fours and two sixes. Raju Basnet got 28 in 27 balls to take the team to 143/8 in 45 overs. Basant Regmi got out in the first ball of the innings for the second time in a row as he was trapped in front by Abhaya Rana. Manoj Baishya (10) and Amit Shrestha (1) fell to Pramod Basnet, who scored 32 in 122 balls as opener earlier, as Bhairahawa went down to 27/3 in 10 overs. The match was stopped by rain in the 15th over with Shakti Gauchan (3) and Antim Thapa (13) at the crease.

Biratnagar Finishes Third

Mehboob Alam took five wickets and Manjeet Shrestha grabbed three as the four-time champions bowled out Birgunj for a paltry 68 runs in 20.5 overs. Binod Das ensured Biratnagar toil hard to achieve the victory by claiming six wickets. Birgunj got a disastrous start losing first eight wickets for only 25 runs in nine overs. It all began when Mehboob bowled Anil Mandal in the fourth ball to become the third player to get 50 wickets in the national league after Raju Basnet and Binod. Mehboob’s deadly first five overs gave him five wickets and Manjeet got three in his first four overs as Birgunj was put in an embarrassing position of getting bowled for the lowest total in the event’s history. Kumar Prasun saved Birgunj’s blushes, scoring 18 off 36 balls with two fours and most importantly taking his team past 44 - the lowest score in the event. Sameer Thapa got nine and the pair added 36 runs to give the team something to bowl for. Birgunj too struck early when Pashupati Mandal got out in the third over but Sunny Pun (21) and Puspa Thapa (16) added 37 runs before Birgunj pegged them down. From 43/1, Biratnagar went down to 43/5 in less than two overs - Binod grabbing four of them and Sanjam Regmi picking one. Binod claimed two more wickets but Mehboob ensured his contribution with bat getting the deserved result with an unbeaten 21 off 30 balls that included three fours. With the performance, Binod took his wickets tally to 59 - five ahead of Mehboob and six of Raju, who still has the Sunday’s final to play.

Shakti scored unbeaten 72 as the defending champion posted 198/8 in the 42-over match before Birgunj was bowled out for 143 in 39 overs. In the other match, Region No 3 Kathmandu thrashed four-time champion Region No 1 Biratnagar by 147 runs. Birgunj captain Binod Das gave his team a good start with a wicket in the first ball as Basanta Regmi skied one to Binay Sah at long-on. It was Binod’s 50th wicket in the national league and he became the second player after Raju Basnet to reach the landmark. He then added two more while Sameer Thapa and Sanjam Regmi also grabbed two each as Bhairahawa went down to 74/7 in 20 overs. But then, Shakti turned the tables on Birgunj partnering 54 with Amrit Bhattarai, who hit 29 off 41 balls with two fours and two sixes. Sagar Khadka, who had earlier went out of the field after sustaining injury on forehead hit by Binod’s delivery, came back to add unbeaten 68 with his captain to take the team to a good total. Sagar got 16 while Shakti hit eight fours and two sixes in his 89-ball knock. Birgunj did not start well losing Suraj Timilsina in the second over and never recovered. In 12 overs, it was 53/5 needing heroics of opener Anil Mandal who was looking good. Anil got 50 of 81 balls with six fours but was undone by an arm ball from left-arm spinner Basanta to put Birgunj at 93/6. Biratnagar proved no match to Kathmandu after captain Paresh Lohani’s fine knock. Paresh scored 79 off 108 balls with 11 fours and Raju Basnet added 41 off 39 balls with three sixes toward the end as Kathmandu posted 235 in 49.5 overs. Gyanendra Malla made a good contribution with 31. For Biratnagar, Mehboob Alam took three wickets and Raj Kumar Pradhan, bowling with injured hand, got two. In reply, poor running between the wickets and fine bowling from Kathmandu bowled Biratnagar out for 88 runs in 22.1 overs — its fourth lowest total in the event’s history. Manoj Katuwal (18), Sunny Pun (16), Ajay Rajbanshi (15) and Pashupati Mandal (11) were the only batsmen to score in double-digit. Paras Khadka (3/9), Abhaya Rana (2/50) and Pramod Basnet (1/24) finished the match as other bowlers were not required. Antim Thapa and Shakti Gauchan scored half-centuries as Bhairahawa raced to 215 in 46 overs. He then turned his left-arm spinners to return with match figures of 2/5 to bowl out Nepalgunj for 50 and record a 165-run win. Nepalgunj’s Meeraj Ansari was the man who saved his team from further embarrassment. He bowled at disciplined pace to take four wickets to restrict Bhairahawa to a meager total and topscored with 12 — including a six of the last scoring shot — to put his team beyond the earlier lowest total. For Bhairahawa, Sagar Khadka (26), Akash Gupta (19) and Manoj Vaishya (18) contributed a few runs apart from Shakti and Antim, who got 52 off 68 balls. Nirmal KC and Sandeep Shrestha picked two wickets each for the losers. In Nepalgunj’s innings, no one except Meeraj, reached double-figure while Faizal Khan also took two wickets for Bhairahawa. April 01, 2008 By NepalCricket.com in National League On a minnow-bashing day, Mehboob Alam was virtually unplayable as Region No 6 Baitadi crumbled down to the lowest total of the Springwood National League Cricket Tournament at the TU Ground on Tuesday. Mehboob took 7/25 - the second best bowling in nationals as Baitadi was bowled out for 44 in 12.4 overs - two less than Nepalgunj’s 46 in 2002. Baitadi was chasing Region No 1 Biratnagar’s 244. The 200-run victory margin is also the biggest of the event breaking Region No 4 Bhairahawa’s 199-run victory over Region No 5 Nepalgunj in 2003. Similarly, Bhairahawa bowled out Nepalgunj for 50 in 26.2 overs to record a 165-run win. Mehboob however failed to break Ritesh Baral’s figures of 7/14 recorded against Nepalgunj in the inaugural match of the event in 2002. He could have broken that too had he not been hit for 17 runs in his second over including three consecutive fours by Binod Bhandari (18 of 13 balls), who unnecessarily ran himself out. Mehboob bowled out Rabindra Chand, who tried to step out on the second ball, and Uttam Chand in the first over and took three wickets in four balls of the seventh over to end Baitadi’s innings early. Manjeet Shrestha took two wickets. Earlier, Raj Kumar Pradhan and Santosh Baral made a new tenth-wicket partnership record by adding 96 runs to rescue Biratnagar which was 148/9 at one stage. Raj Kumar hit 45 off 42 balls with five fours and a six before being bowled by Chandra Saud while Santosh remained unbeaten on 35 off 30 balls. Rajendra Bam returned with impressive figures of 4/27, and Chandra took two wickets early to scare the four-time champion. ICC SUSPENDS TWO NEPALI BOWLERS

The ICC has directed CAN not to select them without ensuring remedial works. The ICC letter reads: “Please ensure that the analysis and any remedial work are carried out on these bowlers prior to any further selection as a bowler to any of your national team.” The two spinners from Region No 4 Bhairahawa were part of the Nepali team that reached the plate final of the Youth World Cup held in Malaysia in February. As one of the key players of the team, Rahul took 10 wickets and scored 51 runs in six matches while Sagar took two wickets and scored 47 runs in as many matches. “I have not been informed about this,” Rahul, considered a player for watch, said over telephone. “I don’t think my bowling action is suspicious and if there is any shortcoming, I can improve on that.” According to Paneru, CAN will decide on further steps only after the ongoing Springwood National League Cricket Tournament. This also means that both reported players, playing for their regional team in the national league, can continue playing in the event. Nepal is scheduled to play two important international events this year – the World Cricket League Division 5 in May in Jersey and the ACC Elite Trophy in July. Both can not be considered for the selection of these events. Birgunj scored 197/7 in 50 overs with Sanjam scoring unbeaten 56 and Shovakant Pandey getting another half-century of the innings. Nepalgunj opener Mahesh Chhetri continued his good form for 52 but rest of the batsmen failed as they were bowled out for 139 in 45.3 overs. Apart from Sanjam who gave away 23 runs in 8.3 overs, Murtaza Hawari also claimed three wickets while Binod Das and Kumar Prasun took a wicket each. Binod is now a wicket shy of becoming only the second bowler in the national league to take 50 wickets behind Raju Basnet. Mahesh 113-ball knock produced four boundaries and was seventh wicket to fall making it 106/7 in 36 overs. Navin Shahi (19 not out), Nirmal KC (14) and Meraj Ansari (12) hit a few runs towards the end. Earlier, Birgunj lost the momentum after a good start. Anil Mandal (17) and Shovakant (52) added 65 for first wicket but then Birgunj lost wickets in quick succession to go down 90/6 – thanks to 4/19 of Nirmal. Raju Basnet returned with career best mark that also made the first bowler to take 50 wickets in the national league to bowl out Birgunj for 122 in 40 overs. Kathmandu’s decision to bat first at the TU Cricket Ground looked a bad one when they lost early three wickets including that of captain Paresh Lohani (4) and Dipendra Chaudhary (18) to Binod Das. But Sharad, who played 152 balls and hit five fours and two sixes, and Gyanendra, who scored 61 off 98 balls with five fours, partnered 146 runs – the second best partnership for any wicket and best for fourth – to put the team out of danger. The four-wicket win came against the same opponent – Region No 5 Nepalgunj. Batting first, Nepalgunj rode on captain’s knock by Mahesh Chhetri to score 215 in 49.4 overs. Mahesh scored 58 off 102 balls with eight fours and added 112 runs with Anupam Singh. Anupam himself got 46 off 77 balls and missed the deserving half-century as Dhirendra Chand bowled him clean. Apart from Sandeep Shrestha’s 30 off 48 deliveries and Nirmal KC’s unbeaten 27 off 28 balls, no other batsmen really had good knock but it was enough to take them to a good total. Sher Singh Khatri and Chandra Saud each took three wickets – Chandra sweeping the tailenders, while the captain got two. Binod Chhetri claimed one. Baitadi had not had a best start losing Dev Narayan Jha (6) and Uttam Bhatta (10) early to Meraj Ansari but some good knocks – especially from Padam KC, Binod Bhandari and Navin Chand – ensured they register their first win. Opener Navin got 24 off 40 balls while Binod hit 32 off 40. After Navin was out at 54 as third wicket, Binod anchored the innings adding 61 runs with Padam. Man of the match Padam remained unbeaten on 68 off 85 balls with nine fours and a six, and took his team to the victory. During the end, it was Dhirendra Chand who blitzed the innings with run-a-ball 36 with five fours and a six and when he was out at the last ball of 36th over, his team needed just four runs for win. Sher Singh got the perfect four in the first ball he faced bringing in joyous moment for his teammates. On Sunday, Region No 3 Kathmandu plays Region No 2 Birgunj.

Biratnagar were 21/5 in the eighth over – Faizal Khan and Amrit Bhattarai being the destroyers, and never really recovered in their innings of 75 runs in 35 overs. Bhairahawa needed just 15 overs to record the easy win. Basant Regmi and Manoj Vaishya added 54 runs before Puspa Thapa trapped Manoj on 21. Amit Shrestha came in and hit brisk 13 off 16 balls and partnering Basant till the end. Basant was unbeaten on 32 off 40 deliveries with four boundaries and a six. The match ended after Ajay Rajbanshi bowled two wides – an indication on how badly the easterners played on the day. Earlier, Faizal and Amrit combined for a deadly pace bowling that decided the match. Biratnagar’s decision to bat first misfired as the opening duo claimed top five wickets in no time. Faizal got Sunil Bista (0), Puspa Thapa (0) and Ajay Rajbanshi (1) while left-arm pacer Amrit removed Laxman Shrestha (0) and most prolific cricketer of Nepal, Mehboob Alam (2) to wreck the innings. March 28, 2008 By NepalCricket.com in National League Defending champion Region No 4 Bhairahawa and Region No 1 Biratnagar began the Springwood National League Cricket Tournament with thumping victories on Friday. Biratnagar defeated Region No 5 Nepalgunj by seven wickets at the Lab Ground while Bhairahawa outplayed Region No 6 Baitadi by 196 runs at the TU Cricket Ground. Bhairahawa bowled out Baitadi for 49 in 16 overs. Shakti Gauchan decided to bat first to give his batsmen some practice ahead of the big clash against Biratnagar on Saturday and his players came up with flying colors. The defending champion scored 245 in 49.3 overs with man-of-the-match Manoj Vaishya and Antim Thapa scoring half-centuries. The pair added 122 runs for the third wicket and laid the foundation for the big score. Vaishya was run out on 64 off 112 balls with just two fours while Antim got 52 in 86 deliveries hitting four boundaries. Trying to get quick runs toward the end, no other batsman could get big score. Bijay Thapa (18), last man Amrit Bhattarai (not out 13) and Akash Gupta (11) reached double figure. Bhairahawa also benefitted from 61 extra runs given away by Baitadi bowlers. Sher Singh Khatri took three wickets as Dhirendra Chand and Chandra Saud each walked away with two wickets. Baitadi, seeking its first win in the national league, was disastrous in batting despite having the services of chief cricket coach Arun Aryal. It lost Binod Bhandari (9) in the second over. Uttam Bhatta (10) and Padam KC (7) played for 20 runs - the biggest partnership of the innings. Once they were removed by Shakti, the Baitadi innings fell like a house of cards. Baitadi’s 49 contained 18 extra runs. Shakti led the bowling from the front taking three wickets giving nine runs. Amrit, who was wayward, also got three and Basanta Regmi claimed two wickets. At the Lab Ground, Raj Kumar Pradhan cleaned off the tail taking four wickets to help Biratnagar bowl out lowly Nepalgunj for 66 in 22.2 overs before Mehboob Alam showed a flash of his aggressive batting hitting eight boundaries to score 35 off just 14 balls. With Mehboob on song, Biratnagar completed the minnow-bashing in 9.1 overs losing three wickets. Sunil Bista (9) and Yashwant Subedi (9*) contributed to the total. Earlier, Nepalgunj captain Mahesh Chhetri failed to get support from his batsmen as his team was bowled out for a lowly total despite his 43 off 36 balls. He too got eight fours while 10 other batsmen combined for 11 runs, with seven out for duck, and 12 runs coming in extras. March 28, 2008 By NepalCricket.com in National League The seventh edition of the Springwood One-Day National League Cricket Tournament begins Friday with defending champion Region No 4 Bhairahawa taking on Region No 6 Baitadi at the TU Cricket Ground and Region No 1 Biratnagar playing Region No 5 Nepalgunj at the Lab School Ground. The inter-region format introduced in 2001 as Birendra Memorial National League will be played under round-robin league format and the top two teams in the standings will compete for the final on April 6. The event will serve as the selection tournament for the national team scheduled to participate in two important events. Nepal will continue its fight for the World Cup 2011 qualification with World Cricket League Division V in Jersey in May while ACC Trophy in Malaysia will select two teams to play for the Asia Cup. Region No 1 Biratnagar, with four titles in six editions, Bhairahawa, the four-time finalists, and Region No 3 Kathmandu, the three-time runner-up, are all looking forward to the title. Region No 2 Birgunj, the 2006 champion, will be the dark horse as always with the ability to knock out any team but not likely to play well consistently. Region No 5 Nepalgunj, with three wins in 27 matches so far, looks to erase the image of minnow along with Region No 6 Baitadi, which failed to register a win in the last two outings. “We are not the favorites, our batting doesn’t look at par but with our strong bowling and favorable conditions, we are counting on reaching the final,” national captain Binod Das, who will lead Birgunj, said. Three grounds — TU, Lab and IOE — will host matches and Binod believes all will be bowler friendly. Shakti Gauchan will lead Bhairahawa hoping for the second straight title. Always a strong team at the national level, Bhairahawa has a team of youngsters with six players from the under-19 team that competed in the Youth World Cup in Malaysia. “We are the last year’s champions and we need to defend the title,” Shakti said after reaching Kathmandu Thursday evening. “We have prepared well and I am confident that we can defend the title.” The team has a lot of experience in it despite being youthful and Shakti is banking on that experience. “We have a team of experienced players, and we are strong and balanced,” he added. “It’s the event that will decide which team is the best, and we want to be best.” For Shakti, Kathmandu, the team he defeated last year to win the title, is the strong opponent along with Biratnagar. Kathmandu has been into the finals for three times and lost all three times. “This year, we need to win,” Kathmandu captain Paresh Lohani said. “We can’t always be runner-up.” Paresh believed with most of the national players and five players from Youth World Cup, Kathmandu is the team to watch. Biratnagar wants to regain the lost glory. After winning the first four titles — two of them without playing as rain in 2002 and walkout in 2004 gave it the title, it failed to reach even the final in the next two editions. “Overall, we are a good team,” captain Manoj Katuwal, who is resuming his career after a break, said. “We have a good combination of experienced and new players and I am confident we will reach the final.” Biratnagar will miss services of Dipendra Chaudhary, who decided to play from Kathmandu two years ago, after leading the team to titles in the earlier editions. Nepal to Host ACC U-17 Elite 2008

March 25, 2008 By NepalCricket.com in General Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has confirmed Nepal as the host for the ACC U-17 Elite Cup 2008 scheduled for November, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) informed at a press meet on Tuesday. “It was a crucial decision because Kuwait was also being considered,” CAN President Binaya Raj Pandey, who participated in the meeting of the ACC Development Committee last week in Pakistan, said. “Questions over facilities at our ground were raised but I assured them of improvement in facilities.” Bahrain, Bhutan, Brunei, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Nepal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and UAE will participate in the event initially scheduled for November 7 to 15, 2008. “The date might be pushed back on participating nation’s request,” Pandey added. Pandey also informed that the next edition of ACC U-15 Elite Cup will be played between 12 teams after no teams were relegated after the fiasco that saw eight teams disqualified over age-verification. “ACC will develop a pre-tournament age-verification protocol within a month and no such event will happen in the future events during the tournament,” he added. Pandey also said that CAN’s plans to ‘emphasise on playing with better teams’ is taking shape after nearing agreement with Bangladesh and positive response from Pakistan. “With Bangladesh, we are finalizing a three-year exchange program,” he said. “While Pakistan has proposed a program for junior, academy and A teams.” “I also talked with Sri Lankan cricket board president Arjuna Ranatunga, who said he will look into things for supporting Nepali cricket,” Pandey said adding that he was flying to Delhi on Friday to meet Arun Jaitley, a member of BCCI and the president of Delhi District Cricket Association, to look into possibilities of tour programs. During the program, CAN General Secretary Tanka Paneru said that Bhaktapur would not host any matches of the upcoming Springwood One-Day National League Cricket Tournament. “Engineering Ground, which was initially unavailable, is now available, so it will host two matches scheduled for Bhaktapur,” he said. Paneru also said that the total budget of the final round of the national league is estimated at Rs 1,050,653. “The players will be paid Rs 300 as daily allowance, a 50 per cent increment from the last year,” he said. CAN has also formed an organizing committee under Upendra Bhattarai and three committees for the event - technical (co-ordinator Naresh Shrestha), ground management (co-ordinator Binod Raj Rajbhandari) and press and publicity (co-ordinator Diwakar Ghale). Plate champions after defeating rat killers Defending champion Nepal thumbles as they got only 74 runs in the bord in U19 plate championship final. In what seemed a complete mismatch, West Indies overpowered Nepal to win their first ever Plate Championship by seven wickets to close out their campaign in the U/19 Cricket World Cup on a high note here at the Bayuemas Oval on Saturday. A four-hour rain delay saw the final reduced to 27 overs from the mandatory 50 as West Indies and Nepal had enough time to somewhat familiarize themselves with the Bayuemas Oval, both teams coming here for the first time. A dormant Nepal side were still finding their feet when the West Indies came at them at all guns blazing with both seam bowlers Jason Dawes (4-18) and Delorn Johnson (1-9) picking up four quick wickets as Nepal struggled to cope with their pace. Dawes' short-pitched deliveries had the Nepalese batsmen ducking and dodging while his good length deliveries earned him three top order scalps. "It was a nice wicket to bowl on because of the bounce. I may have got four wickets but I could have got more had I not got carried away with the pace and bounce it provided," said Man of the match, Dawes. The West Indies were aware of Nepal captain Paras Khadka's batting ability and it was his wicket they were looking for. Khadka looked very confident coming in two-down and that too, in only the third over. With neither seamers getting the prized scalp, a change in tactics was employed. A slower Darren Bravo (3-9) was introduced and a first-ball drive attempt only saw a thickest edge carry to Kieran Powell in the slips much to the delight of Bravo. There was more joy to come for Bravo as he soon took two more wickets as Nepal were staggering at 53 for seven. "Coming into the Plate finals, we obviously took the game very seriously and I was actually surprised that Nepal chose to bat on such a good bowling track, one that provided us with a lot of bounce", said West Indian coach Larry Gomes. Nepal were soon put out of their misery halfway though the 26th over as they were bowled out for a paltry 74. The West Indies batsmen hit the ground running with Powell (24) choosing the aerial route more often than not. In Nepal's second over, Khadka's first, saw Powell clobber one four and a colossal six that went over mid-wicket; 16 runs came off that over. Although there was no real contest in reaching the target, the West Indies lost three wickets. The runs came in full flow once the spinners were introduced and the game was soon closed out in the 15th over with Bravo (24 not out) finishing off the game with two consecutive boundaries. “We are disappointed that we did not have that extra edge to finish things off,” said Khadka. Nepal booked its place in the Plate Championship final of ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia on Tuesday with a thrilling four-run victory over Namibia at Johor Cricket Academy. Namibia was set a target of 144 runs to win after the game had been reduced to 34 overs a side due to rain early in the day. And the Africans almost got there with Raymond van Schoor (48) and Louis van der Westhuizen (33) doing most of the good work. But this is a highly polished and accomplished Nepal side, particularly in the bowling and fielding departments and, as usual, the reigning Plate champion did not give much away to the batting side. Captain and all-rounder Paras Khadka, having earlier scored 44 with the bat, added two wickets with the ball and as the game went into the final stages, the pressure built on the Namibians. Raj Shreestha broke a crucial 35-run partnership between van Schoor and Keady Strauss in the dying moments of the game and with 16 runs needed off eight balls, the lower order was not quite up to the task despite the best efforts of Gert Coetzee, who scored an unbeaten nine from four balls. Earlier, Nepal made 143-8 in 34 overs with Khadka in fine form but Sean Silver (3-20) and Strauss (2-25) kept a lid on it for Namibia. Nepal will now face the winner of the West Indies and Papua New Guinea, who play in the other semi-final tomorrow at MPTI, Johor. Paras Khadka and Amrit Bhattarai took six wickets in opening spells as Nepal bowled out Zimbabwe in 59 runs for a 99-run victory in the Plate Quarterfinal of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. With the win, Nepal entered Plate Semifinal where it meets Namibia (again!), who defeated Malaysia by 9 wickets. It is also confirmed with the win that Nepal now finishes at least at 12th ranking among 16 participating nations. Nepalese batting failed one more time. But this was the bowlers who save them from the race. Nepal haven't learnt to bat yet in this tournament. They can't score 200 in this tournament. This failure is not new. Nepal take the victory from the hand of Namibia in thriller

A patient half-century from Mahesh Chhetri, some tidy medium-pace bowling and a whole lot of nerve from young Gyanendra Malla snatched Nepal a three-run victory from a tricky situation in Penang. Defending a total of 164, Nepal had done well to chip away at Namibia's batting order but at 142 for 7 in the 42nd over it appeared they were running out of options. That is when left-arm medium-pacer Raj Shrestha dismissed top-scorer Louis van der Westhuizen for 65 and set into motion a tense next seven overs. Taking a gamble on 17-year-old Malla, who had never bowled in his first-class career, Nepal's captain Paras Khadka got it spot on. In the 45th over Malla had Pikky Ya France edging behind, and then bowled Morne Engelbrecht for 7 with the last ball of the 49th over to finish a tense contest. Nepal's grip had been administered by a tight start with the ball, tightened through slow left-arm spinner Rahul Vishwakarma's economical 2 for 23 and finally it was Malla who stole the show. Earlier Chhetri,Nepal's wicketkeeping-opener, played a lone hand in his side's total of 164 against a disciplined Namibian bowling attack. Having won the toss, Nepal's batsmen could only manage small partnerships as Namibia kept it tight. Chhetri held up one end sensibly but his team-mates, unsure as to what route to take, failed to offer anything substantial. Westhuizen, with his left-arm spin, bowled an economical 10-2-17-2 and was well backed up by his bowling partners. Unfortunately for Namibia, the same was not the case when Westhuizen was batting. Nepal will face Zimbawe or Malayasia on Sunday in plate quarter final. POOR BATTING GIVES AUSSIE VICTORY

Australia defeated Nepal by 96 runs to chalk up their second successive Group C win in the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup match at the Malaysian University of Science ground, Penang, on Tuesday. Both teams made several changes in their line-up. The Australians introduced Kirk Pascoe, James Pattinson and Clive Rose for Sarna Kumar, David King and Jeremy Smith while on the opposite end the Nepalese included Raj Shrestha and Antim Thapa as replacements for Puspha Thapa and Abhaya Rana. Nepal won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that did not really go down well as the Australian openers Phillip Hughes and Kirk Pascoe went about their business with no pressure, blasting away the Nepalese bowling machinery for a 62-run first wicket partnership. Kirk Pascoe hit a six off Amrit Bhattarai to reach the 50-run mark at the end of the ninth over. Nepal brought in spinner Shrestha after 10 overs to stem the flow of runs and looking for the first break through. It worked as Shrestha bowled Pascoe off the first ball in the 15th over not before belting 37 runs off 39 balls laced with five boundaries and a mighty six. Seven balls later Shrestha took the big wicket of Australian captain Micheal Hill when he had him caught by Aakash Gupta at deep long on for 12 runs with the total 74 for the second wicket. At the first interval for drinks, Australia reached 79-2 off 17 overs. Shrestha claimed his third wicket that of Steven Smith in the 23rd over, caught by Sagar Khadka for 17 soon after the hundredth run was up on the scoreboard. Hughes (46) and Michael Cramer then put up a 48-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Hughes was stumped by Mahesh off B.K. Rahul, four short of his half century. Cramer was then caught by Gyanendra Malla off Antim Thapa’s bowling for 32 as the Australians raced to 65 in the 40th over. Going for quick runs Australia lost James Faulkner (22), James Pattinson (10) and Daniel Burns (0) in quick succession to the bowling of Paras Khadka, who was operating off a shorter run up with spin rather than his normal pace. Australia’s tally was at 195-8 then. O’Brien was stumped off Rahul for three runs before Clive Rose parried the total to the 200-run mark with two just overs remaining. Khadka removed Josh Hazlewood with three balls left in the penultimate over (2 runs) before the Aussies innings crumbled for 206. Clive remained unbeaten on four. Paras had match figures of 4-32 in 9.3 overs, Shrestha shined with 3-32, Rahul B.K. celebrated 2-3 for 34 runs and Thapa had 1-21. In reply, Nepal got off to a torrid start when Mahesh Chettri was brilliantly run out by a direct hit from Hughes with the score at 16. The next several overs were a comedy of errors committed by Nepal as they lost three quick wickets - Pattinson had Anil Mandal caught behind by O’Brien for one and at the very next ball dismissed skipper Khadka leg before for a golden duck. Pattinson then had Malla caught by Steven Smith at second slip for 17 as the Asian champions were left reeling at 36-4 in the 10th over. Clive Rose had Sagar Khadka caught in the cover region by Hill for six off the first ball in the 16th over as Nepal moved to 53-5. Clive also removed Shrestha for 11 when he had him caught by Hill at close range with Nepal staring defeat at 62-6 in 18 overs. Thapa was than dismissed leg before to Clive for one run. Aakash Gupta soon followed and it was a matter of time for the innings to be folded. Shrestha was caught and bowled by Steven for a duck but a stubborn last wicket stand of 44 runs between Rahul (unbeaten on 33) and Bhattarai (9) delayed the finish. However Steven had Bhattarai caught by Hill to end Nepal’s resistance at 110. Pattinson who finished with bowling figures of 3-25 was duly named the Man of the Match. “The pitch was rather dry and very hard and I had to hit the deck hard for the ball to do its bit,” said Pattinson, adding that he achieved some bounce with his pace measured at around 125km to claim the three wickets that broke the hearts out of the opposition. “When we removed opening batsman Mahesh Chhetri, it actually set the tone for us to bowl our hearts out for a comfortable victory.” Rose and Smith took three wickets each respectively at the expense of 21 and 25 runs while Josh Hazlewood chipped in with the one wicket for 26 runs. A disappointed Nepal team manager Tarak Dixit said the Australians deserved to win for their all-round performance. “The Australians batted, fielded and bowled well and they never gave my boys easy runs to score,” said Tarak, adding that Pattinson’s splendid bowling spelt was disastrous for his team early on.
